How do you know if you are buying a Superb Mola?
There are several factors in which serve as a guideline in evaluating the artistic quality of a mola: most important is the finest of the craftmanship, along with vibrant colors, design, balance, quality of the Kuna fabric.
-Smooth even, narrow lines.
-A captivating design, vibrant colors, something that stands out.
-Fabric: Always superb quality fabric.
-Symmetry: Visual balance.
-The curves which from the design must be very regular, and not a series of short straigh lines.
-The entire surface of the mola should be used, with any additional designs, stripes, triangles, circles, etc.
-Stitching: Invisible.
-The stitches must be almost invisible. The thread should be exactly the same color as the fabric, and the stitches should be very fine and close together.
-Number of layers 2,3,4, 5 or more, the greater the number of layers, better the quality.
-Intricate cut outs, such as curves, zig zag made out of the same fabric (not the one that we buy at the craft store), or tiny tiny triangles or serkan.
- Laid the mola on a flat surface, it should not be uneven, and must be made with high quality fabrics (100% cotton is always use, the base layer doesn't have to be 100% cotton).
-All the above is what determine the quality of a mola.
What determine the cost of the mola:
The cost of a mola always depends on the quality of the work. When I say quality, I am referring to the perfect stitching when the Kuna artist is sewing that particular mola. Yes, there are many Kunas who make molas but keep in mind that some Kuna Artists are more talented than others, some may have more experience on sewing, also the abilities and skills on each individual is a plus. You can find molas from Darien all the way to San Blas, however the best molas that you can find today are on the very traditional Islands: Mamitupu, Aligandi, Achutupu (a very interesting Island), Ustupu... (all these Islands are located in San Blas and that's where all my molas come from).
Is very important that you look at the number of layers, if the mola has a lot of layers of fabric and is all handmade the mola will be obviously more expensive.
