The Motif of the Molas are based in the worldview of the Kuna tribe or in the geographic design of Nature. Many are the motifs of each mola, some are: zoomorphic, antropomorphic, geometrics, abstracts,beliefs. Other motifs have a labyrinthine patterns that repeat several times and we can find them often on the Kuna Creations. There is more behind the beautiful motif of each mola. One of the most important is that the molas are present since the women's are born and through out the very important moments of their life, the same as their belief in myths and mother earth. Some Molas give us the insight of how the art was taught to the women's, others allow us to travel beyond their culture.
When they are little girls some of their games are pretending to make molas, later on they will sew their first piece of mola garment for the puberty ceremony.
Next, when they get married, their "mother in law" will give them a mola as a gift and when they pass away they will be buried with the molas they made.
The women's love sewing a unique mola for each ceremony or event, which later on they will pass onto their children's. When I travel to the Islands some of them will allow me to see their special blouses that they had made for the ceremonies. The molas may have the theme of the ceremonies, etc.
When my supplier presented me a number of molas that She had for years, molas that are not found very easy and I was able to buy some of them, which I am keeping, then I realize that no matter which one is the particular motif, each mola hide a secret.

Characteristics of a fine mola
The Mola have a number of layer of cloth.
The Artist choose a very good design and colors (this required good eyesigth).
The main subject is outlined.
The mola use reverse colors.
The stitching should be fine.
The Artist use a good thread that match the fabric.
The edges should be very narrow and even.
The four corners should be perfect squares.
If I look at the theme everything should be sewn in place.
Additional layers of colors are use between the top and base layer
to bring more colors to the theme.
Sawtooth stitch, tiny holes, circle or triangle appliques is included.
Embroidery details done with thread are added to the top layer to embellish and give the final touch (just by looking at the mola I can tell right away if the embroidery is really fine).
Many hourse of careful sewing will be the result of an extraordinary and exquisite piece of artwork.
On my trips to the San Blas Islands, I buy the entire blouse front and back, the rest of the fabric from the blouse I will give that back to the Kunas so they can make another blouse.
When I buy mola blouses or molas, first I look at the pieces compare one to another, then I judge what is in that particular mola that the other one is lacking and then make a decision, of course that at this moment I am thinking about my customers. In my personal opinion, things like the mola has too much excess of fabric on the sides, it has a thread hanging or the edges are not trimed these are the least of my worries, I will grab a scissors and cut it. Normally the edges on the molas are not finished edges, however the mola should have 4 equal corners.
I like molas that incorporate difficult techniques and details that show me something different but at the same time show me that the Kuna Artist went farther beyond their skills to create that extraordinary masterpiece of art. I pay more for these molas, however I am very confident that is high quality, something that will last for the years to come.
I love the pieces that almost talk to me because of their beauty.

Un mola traditionnelle est assemblé en utilisant la technique de l'appliqué inversé sur plusieurs couches de tissu de coton et celles faites sur les applique inverse sont envisager le meilleur.
Dans cette photo, vous serez en mesure de voir étape par étape comment un mola est fait, le coin sont repliés dans le but de montrer le nombre de couches de tissu qui ont été utilisés à cette assemblée mola.
Chaque mola est cousu main.
L'utilisation est Technique: Reverse Applique Applique ou:
La technique est un peu compliqué, et la séquence de base sont les suivants: élaborer la conception, arroser, tailler et coudre.
Le travail manuel se fait en deux panneaux, chaque panneau a une conception analogue, mais jamais exactement les mêmes.
Le tissu utilisé et la taille des molas ont évolué au fil du temps.
Pendant longtemps, les Kunas utilisé percale importés d'Angleterre, mais maintenant ils utilisent du coton ou tout mélange de coton tissu disponible de la Colombie ou soit un magasin de tissu local au Panama, ils ont préféré un matériau qui est souple et facile à la main, rappelez-vous qu'ils utilisent plusieurs couches de tissu et l'aiguille doit passer par toutes les couches. Depuis mola est devenu une source majeure de revenus, au point de nombreuses femmes en créer de nouveaux à chaque instant de rechange, souvent la nuit par une lampe au kérosène. (Quelques-uns de ces îles ont des générateurs pour produire de l'électricité).
Comment un mola est faite:
Les Kunas sélectionnera plusieurs couches carré de tissu, l'une des couches servira de couche de fondation, cette couche restera entière et non coupée. Il devient la couleur de fond et prend en charge la couture des autres couches. Ils pourront également choisir d'autres couches de tissu qui sera placée sur le dessus de la couche de fondation.
Pour faire une mola, les femmes kuna dessine le dessin sur la couche supérieure. Puis elle arrose soigneusement le long de la ligne et des réductions sur les 1 / 8 de pouce sur les deux côtés de la ligne arrosé. Puis, sous les plis sur les 1 / 16 "le long de l'arête de coupe de la couche supérieure et coud le bord plié de la couche de base en utilisant points cachés correspondant fil et une aiguille fine, les points doivent être petits, régulièrement espacées, le fil doit correspondre au top couche, la conception doit toujours se démarquer. Sur les pointes acérées tour sous l'excès de tissu dans un petit espace, puis couper ce qui dépasse de tissu, une fois que vous commencez à coudre un mola le premier nœud doit être caché et pour finir la fin proprement , les Kunas de faire une boucle au dernier point et mettre l'aiguille à travers. Il s'agit d'un processus de confiseurs, exige beaucoup de patience et beaucoup de temps en fonction de la complexité de la mola.
Certains des responsables mola les plus expérimentés ne pas utiliser un crayon pour dessiner la conception, ils ont coupé la conception directement sur les couches carré de tissu.
Toutes les couches y aura du travail sur le dessus de la couche de fondation, chaque couche de tissu aura des coupures qui révèlent les couleurs des couches en dessous (la couche de fondation reste entier et non coupé). Pour molas avec plusieurs couches le processus est répété jusqu'à ce que le thème est fini. Gardez à l'esprit que la mola est fait avec 2, 3, 4 ou plusieurs couches de tissu. Un grand nombre de couches sur chaque mola moyens plus élevés et la meilleure qualité.
La surface entière de la mola devrait être utilisé, mais toutes les conceptions supplémentaires, bandes, triangles, cercles, etc, broderie supplémentaires devraient mettre en évidence le sujet principal et de ne pas occulter.
Molas avec une variété de couleurs et de motifs de remplissage complexe nécessitent des étapes supplémentaires, dont plusieurs finitions.
Dans les îles, les molas ne durent pas très longtemps parce que l'air marin finit par les détruire. C'est la raison pour laquelle il n'ya pas de vieux "antique" molas dans les îles.
Molas est également devenu très articles de collection et de nombreuses personnes aujourd'hui sont les nouvelles utilisations de molas.
L'origine du peuple Kuna est incertain. Ils peuvent être des descendants des Indiens des Caraïbes, certains anthropologues croient que les Kuna (kuna) pour avoir provenu de l'Asie du Sud il ya six mille années.
Les similitudes de l'aiguille de la Kuna et le peuple Hmong du Laos, le Cambodge et le Vietnam sont étonnants. Personnellement, je propres quelques morceaux de Hmong et je compare le travail et il est très similaire.
Quelle est la méthode applique Kuna inverse: c'est la méthode qui nécessite l'utilisation de plusieurs couches de tissu qui seront coupés sur des motifs complexes et la découpe des couches supérieures se révèlent les couches les plus coloré en dessous.
Sur un mola chaines complexes sont toujours découpés et cousus en vertu de révéler les dessous de la couche (s), également à définir le bord d'une figure. Ces chaînes peuvent être aperçu à 2, 3, 5 ou 6 lignes. Il ya beaucoup de façon complexe de la création de l'esquisse à plusieurs, d'autres impliquent l'ajout de marqueterie étroite.
Le mola mesures traditionnelles de 16 "x 13", et ensuite seront intégrées dans la partie médiane d'une blouse, un servant de l'avant et l'autre que le dos. Lors de la présentation ensemble comme une paire sur une blouse, deux molas devrait présenter le même sujet, se ressemblent beaucoup et ne diffèrent que dans les petits détails des dessins et des couleurs, ils doivent toujours harmoniser les uns avec les autres.
Le modèle devrait être équilibrée et proportionnelle, mais pas nécessairement symétrique, car aucune des mesures précises sont utilisés.
Le mot Mola, est en langue Morra Kuna et les moyens la tenue de la kuna femmes et il a une relation profonde avec la nature.
Les couleurs de ces arts proviennent les principales couleurs: le rouge, noir et orange.
Molas s'est diversifiée dans la tradition et les commerciaux. Selon les artisans Kuna, les traditionnels sont plus difficiles à faire parce qu'ils sont faits de plusieurs couches de tissu, chaque couche a des coupures qui révèle les couleurs ci-dessous. Les commerciaux a beaucoup d'images d'animaux et la nature, ils sont plus faciles à faire parce que la composition est faite de beaucoup de morceaux de tissu "appliqués".
Les conceptions principales sont d'oiseaux, poissons, tortues, pêcheur, bateau, géométrique, des manifestations culturelles, ce qui se passe dans la vie, l'histoire contemporaine ou quoi que ce qu'ils voient. Leurs créations sont leur propre création artistique et cousu par eux.
Mola Art a commencé environ deux cents ans auparavant. Le mola est probablement originaire de la peinture du corps au début des femmes dans le dix-septième siècle, et ensuite appliqué sur un chiffon puis robe décorations.
Beaucoup de gens pensent que bien molas sont une chose du passé et que les personnes âgées molas sont mieux qu'aujourd'hui ceux mais ce n'est pas vrai. Les molas sont aujourd'hui de plus en plus complexe et détaillée que Kunas ever. The sont la sélection des couleurs plus vives, plus de détails, plus de broderie, dans l'ensemble, ils constituent un élément exceptionnel de création d'œuvres d'art de haute qualité.

The Kuna Women Traditional Dress:
The Kunas (also spelled Cunas) Indians of Panama live on a tropical paradise known as "the San Blas Islands" off the northeast coast of Panama since the nineteenth century. One of the most important native groups in Panama that contribute substantially to his Economy and offer the most beautiful work of arts.
The Kunas are well known for their molas, the term molas means "blouse" "dress" or "clothing", it also refer to the stitched panel front and back of the blouse. Making a mola is not only a past time but it is an important source of income for the Kuna family.
The Kuna dress is one of the most beautiful dresses in the world, just recently a Panamanian Lady won a best skirt award: she wore a mola inspired skirt showing the magnificient work of the Kuna Indians of San Blas, Panama.
The traditional dress is also an essential part of their cultural identity and the dress consist of a blouse with short, puffy sleeves, cut out of beautiful printed fabric, into which, the extraordinary mola panels are set in the front and back of the blouse.
The mid-lenght skirt, the saburete, is a rectangle of fabric wrapped around the waist, the fabric has some beautiful desings and the background is green or blue.
The head scarf is draped over a woman's short hair but can also be folded and carried over the shoulder, the scarf is also known as muswe, this is a panel of bright red fabric with some beautiful yellow designs.
The wini or the long string of beads is wrapped around the forearms and calves, the most common colors are orange, yellow and black, but it can also come in a variety of colors and when they are wrapped around it forms a beautiful traditional geometric desing.
Their dress is completed with a small gold ring through the nose, earrings, necklaces and gold rings on their fingers.
Their cheeckbones are highlighted with annatto fruit, it has an orange-red color, and the woman's also use the jagua juice to draw a black line from the base of the forehead along the bridge of the nose to the tip.
Shoes: the woman's wear any pair of sandals.

Molas can be found on the borders of Colombia (Northwest Mountains of Colombia) in the Darien Rainforest, however these molas are not the same "quality" "stitching" as the molas made by the Kuna Indians of San Blas located within Panama. Here are some molas that give us the Oh! Ah! and that as soon as I see them, I will say I like it and I want it... I must have this one... forget it I will buy them all, these molas are made with the tiny stitches that you will need a magnifiying glass to look at them.

On February 28, I share the insight of Panama and The Kunas of San Blas with a group of students at Miami University that will be traveling to San Blas, Kuna Yala.
Even do, there wasn't a lot of time I talk to them about Panama Main Economic Activities, how Panama promote the tourism, why to choose Panama as your next destination: vacation, business, retire, ect., what to see and do in Panama.
This was a great opportunity to share with them more about the Kunas, the daily life in San Blas Islands and the Mola Art.
The students were fascinating with the Art of the Kuna Women's of San Blas.

How to display your Molas???
It is entirely up to you, what you want to do with your mola.
I personally love framing my molas, making something for
my home that I can use, quilts, pillows, placemats, tablecloth, aprons, purse, pot holders, mola panels can be worn by sewing them into a jacket, skirt, blouse, etc...
The mola looks better in person and the gold frame add more beauty to this particular mola.
You can also frame your small molitas (framed in Panama)
front and back of my pillows, I decide to use a black fabric on the
back, it actually give great contrast specially because I use a mola
with black background.
I didn't have to necessarily use black, it will also look great with the
orange fabric (front and back).

"El arte mas colorido de nuestra cultura"
La vida simple de los Kunas ha cambiado muy poco despues del descubrimiento de las Americas por Cristobal Colon.
Panama tiene siete maravillosas culturas indigenas y los Kunas es uno de los grupos indigenas que ha sabido preservar sus traditicones autenticas hasta estos dias. Los "Kunas" o "Cunas" de la comarca Kuna-Yala, oriundos de San Blas, es una de las principales etnias indigenas de Panama. Y representan un aporte muy importante a la artesania nacional. “Las Molas”
Una cadena de islas localizada en el atlantico de Panama es el hogar del grupo indigena de los Kunas o Cunas, en este archipielago de islas o Kuna Yala (formalmente conocido como La Comarca de San Blas), los Kunas han mantenido su identidad Cultural y Autonomia Interna, pese a muchos muchos anos de lucha por mantener su identidad y cultura.
Ademas, muy poco se conoce del comienzo de la historia de los Kunas.
El origen de los Kunas es desconocidos. Ellos pueden ser descendientes de los Indios del Caribe, algunos antropologos creen que los Kunas (Cuna) se originaron en el sur de Asia seis mil anos atras.
El trabajo a mano de los Kunas es muy parecido al de los Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam llamado “Hmong” estos trabajos son muy similares a los de los Kunas.
El arte de la mola comenzo doscientos anos atras.
En un principio las mujeres Kunas utilizaban pieles de animales con plumas (pelicanos, pajaros, guacamayas, etc).
De acuerdo con las primeras descripciones de Andagoya en 1514 las mujeres se pintaban sus pieles o cuerpo con colores brillantes y disenos abstractos o geometricos, con figuras o motivos como animales, plantas, etc. Ellas utilizaban tintas extraidas de fibras de vegetales, los colores eran rojo, azul y amarillo.
El contacto de los Kunas con los Espanoles y por ende el contacto con las telas, ademas de el proceso de sus pinturas en el cuerpo que eventualmente paso a las telas y posteriormente se empezaron a crear disenos utilizando retazos de telas, es asi como nacen las primeras molas elaborada con telas.
Que es una mola?
Existen muchas piezas de Arte en Panama que provienen de nuestros aborigenes, sin embargo "La Mola" es uno de los trabajos de arte mas famosos de Panama, y es uno de los de mayor reconocimiento a traves de todo el mundo, tanto asi que se han logrado convertir en piezas especiales de coleccion, ademas de formar parte de muchos museos alrededor del mundo.
La palabra Mola es “Morra” en el lenguaje Kuna (Dulegaya), significa el vestuario de la mujer Kuna (la Blusa de los Kunas) y tiene una relacion bien ligada a la naturaleza.
Los Kunas utilizan frecuentemente colores primarios como lo son el amarillo, azul, rojo, etc. y como base principal utilizan los colores como el negro, naranja, rojo vino, y en algunas ocasiones podemos encontrar el azul laguna, rojo, rosado, y el blanco.
Las molas son como un libro de historia para los Kunas ellas guardan felicidad, tristeza, tradicion, cultura y todos los eventos q hayan ocurrido en su vidas.
Estas piezas son un verdadero trabajo de arte, y son preferidos por muchos colleccionistas.
Las molas se utilizan para adornar todo tipo de vestidos, blusas, sueteres de damas, camisas y corbatas para hombres, asi como diferentes tipos de articulos como carteras, bolsos para cosmeticos, zapatos, sandalias, estuches para lentes, estuches para celulares, guantes de cocinas, almohadas, cortinas, manteles de mesa, guindados de pared, se pueden hacer sabanas de acolchado, se pueden enmarcar.
Tanto asi que se clasifican en molas comerciales y las tradicionales. Las comerciales son aquellas elaborada en aplicacion y en ellas se observan dibujos y disenos de la naturaleza, pajaros, peces, etc. Estas molas son destinadas principalmente para la venta a los turista que visitan nuestro pais. Las tradicionales son aquellas que se ven con figura o diseno geometrica. Estas son mucho mas complicadas en su elaboracion porque se utiliza la tecnica de aplicacion al reverso y se trabajan con varias capas de tela (ellas son las que forman parte de la blusa de la mujer Kuna).
Como se elaboran?
Tecnica: Aplicacion al Reverso o Aplicacion
La tecnica de aplicacion al reverso es un poco complicada, pero las molas que son elaboradas utilizando esta tecnica son consideradas las mejores y son las que forman parte de la blusa de la mujer Kuna.
Las molas tradicionales son elaboradas con muchas capas de tela superpuestas. Se escogen las telas que se van a utilizar, generalmente una mola regular debe medir 16 ½” x 13”, ellos escojen una de las telas como base, luego se coloca una encima de la base, y se dibujan las lineas que se quieren recortar, una vez dibujadas se procede a hacer el corte en la tela, y posteriormente a cocerla sobre la otra de tal modo que en las incisiones realizadas se observe el color del textil inferior. Este proceso se hace una y otra vez hasta finalizar el diseno.
Algunos de los mas expertas (os) en el proceso de confeccionar molas no utilizan lapiz para dibujar el diseno, si no que recortan el diseno directamente en las capas de telas.
En cambio, el proceso para las molas comerciales es mas facil. “El diseno es realizado por retazos de tela pegados (metodo de applique) unos sobre otros con una forma predetermined, y posteriormente se cosen en esa position para finalizar la obra de arte, esto hace que sean mucho mas sencillas de hacer”. Dichas piezas son identificadas por el colorido que hay en sus composiciones. Los colores primarios de la etnia Kuna son el negro, el naranja y el rojo; por eso es que se observan muchos colores.
Sin embargo en las molas podemos conseguir una variedad de colores y todo va a depender de lo que la artesana desee expresar en ese momento y lo que la haya inspirado.
Sus disenos son propios de su expresion artistica y elaborado por ellos mismos.
Como nace la inspiracion para los disenos de las molas?
Las mujeres Kunas encuentran inspiracion para sus disenos de mola en la vida cotidiana, en todo lo que rodea a la artesana al momento de confeccionar una pieza, naturaleza, animales, plantas, religion, deportes, simbolos patrios. Muchas veces por lo que vieron en las bases militares de Estados Unidos en Panama (Ejemplos Elicopteros, Emblemas Militar), por los barcos o cruceros que transitan a traves del Canal de Panama (Ejemplo: Disney Cruise), por lo que vean en los turistas. Ademas, como los Kunas viven en las islas y tienen mucha abundancia de peces y aves, por eso es que siempre se hacen piezas con estos disenos.
En cambio las molas tradicionales siempre se dice que los disenos provienen de los cantos que las mujeres escuchan de nuestros caciques, leyendas, suenos o pura imaginacion.
¿Cuál es la mision detras de la venta del arte de la mola? (¿Quién se beneficia)
Mola Art and Craft se inicio con el sueño de compartir este arte desde las remotas islas de San Blas a través de un compromiso de apoyar a los indígenas Kunas de San Blas para mantener su historia, trandicion y cultura.
A través de la venta de molas los Kunas buscan los medios de seguridad financiera, una mejor educación para sus hijos, salud, etc. La venta de las molas es el unico ingreso que reciben los Kunas para sus familias. Los Kunas viven en islas pequeñas con oportunidades económicas limitadas.
¿Qué caracteristicas hacen a una mola algo especial?
Molas son parte de la identidad cultural de la mujer Kuna. Ellas representan a sus creencias, su vida cotidiana y el medio ambiente.
Lo que hace una mola tan especial, es la mezcla de los diseños llamativos, brillantes colores y costuras meticulosa.
Ademas es un arte que se colecciona y que su valor aumenta a traves de los anos.
Cómo se involucró con el arte de la mola?
¿Como lo aprendistes, etc?
Nací en la provincia de Penonome y crecí en la ciudad de Panamá, creo que el haber nacido en una provincia en donde se le da mucho valor al arte, al folklore, a las polleras ha tenido mucho que ver.
Yo estudie Economía en la universidad, pero siempre tuve pasion por el arte y la historia especialmente el de mi pais (Panama). Mi experiencia de trabajo aquí en los EE.UU. incluyen la enseñanza de programas de computacion, hipotecas, venta de bienes raíces, además de que siempre sentia amor y pasión por los textiles, tejidos, siempre coleccionaba arte de Panamá, y con algunas piezas las utilizaba para decorar mi hogar y otras en costuras.
En el ano 2000 finalmente escuche a la parte artistica dentro de mi y comienza el interes en trabajar con la tela y más tarde empecé a vender las molas, el arte “textiles” de mi país, y "Mola Art and Craft" nació con un sueño de compartir el arte de estas islas remotas ubicadas en Panamá con los residente de Estados Unidos y de muchos otros países.
Cuentame un poco mas de tus productos y el nombre de tu coleccion???
En primer lugar quisiera comentales que mi colección se creó a principios del ano 2008 y esta disponible para la venta en mi sitio web desde mayo del 2008. He sido afortunado de vender todas las carteras a través de mi sitio web y algunos de ellas localmente. bolsos BellaModa son "algo unico" o una edición limitada, todas las molas son hechas a mano y es algo maravilloso saber que eres la única persona, o uno de los pocos en adquirir o poseer uno de estos bolsos o monederos. A muchas personas les encanta la idea de que están que tienen o estan usando algo que es exclusivo. Es algo especial porque el arte de las molas reflejan historia y la cultura.

Qué te inspiró para crear esta colección de bolsos, acolchados, almohadas, y delantales?
Mi inspiracion nace de distintas fuentes. Mis diseños son, evidentemente, muy influidos por las flores, pájaros, mariposas, tortugas, pero sobre todo por la belleza y el color de las Molas, por mi cultura, que es rica y colorida, ademas de la inspiracion por lo que veo a mi alrededor. Al observar la moda de hoy y las variaciones de la tela, a veces me puede dar ideas, y luego viene la inspiración de todos los tejidos de distinto tipo que me encanta trabajar, por otro lado los temas y colores en la Mola con diseños contemporáneos.
Tengo una pasión por las Molas, por todos sus colores y diseños. A mi me gusta coleccionarlas. Yo soy el tipo de persona que amo los artículos con colores vibrantes.
Me gusta disenar y elaborar bolsos modernos que a mis clientes les encante.
¿Tiene algún consejo de como vender y promocionar articulos hecho a mano??

The secret behind Mola Art

The Motif of the Molas are based in the worldview of the Kuna tribe or in the geographic design of Nature. Many are the motifs of each mola, some are: zoomorphic, antropomorphic, geometrics, abstracts,beliefs. Other motifs have a labyrinthine patterns that repeat several times and we can find them often on the Kuna Creations. There is more behind the beautiful motif of each mola. One of the most important is that the molas are present since the women's are born and through out the very important moments of their life, the same as their belief in myths and mother earth. Some Molas give us the insight of how the art was taught to the women's, others allow us to travel beyond their culture.
When they are little girls some of their games are pretending to make molas, later on they will sew their first piece of mola garment for the puberty ceremony.
Next, when they get married, their "mother in law" will give them a mola as a gift and when they pass away they will be buried with the molas they made.
The women's love sewing a unique mola for each ceremony or event, which later on they will pass onto their children's. When I travel to the Islands some of them will allow me to see their special blouses that they had made for the ceremonies. The molas may have the theme of the ceremonies, etc.
When my supplier presented me a number of molas that She had for years, molas that are not found very easy and I was able to buy some of them, which I am keeping, then I realize that no matter which one is the particular motif, each mola hide a secret.

How to determine the quality of a mola

Characteristics of a fine mola
The Mola have a number of layer of cloth.
The Artist choose a very good design and colors (this required good eyesigth).
The main subject is outlined.
The mola use reverse colors.
The stitching should be fine.
The Artist use a good thread that match the fabric.
The edges should be very narrow and even.
The four corners should be perfect squares.
If I look at the theme everything should be sewn in place.
Additional layers of colors are use between the top and base layer
to bring more colors to the theme.
Sawtooth stitch, tiny holes, circle or triangle appliques is included.
Embroidery details done with thread are added to the top layer to embellish and give the final touch (just by looking at the mola I can tell right away if the embroidery is really fine).
Many hourse of careful sewing will be the result of an extraordinary and exquisite piece of artwork.
On my trips to the San Blas Islands, I buy the entire blouse front and back, the rest of the fabric from the blouse I will give that back to the Kunas so they can make another blouse.
When I buy mola blouses or molas, first I look at the pieces compare one to another, then I judge what is in that particular mola that the other one is lacking and then make a decision, of course that at this moment I am thinking about my customers. In my personal opinion, things like the mola has too much excess of fabric on the sides, it has a thread hanging or the edges are not trimed these are the least of my worries, I will grab a scissors and cut it. Normally the edges on the molas are not finished edges, however the mola should have 4 equal corners.
I like molas that incorporate difficult techniques and details that show me something different but at the same time show me that the Kuna Artist went farther beyond their skills to create that extraordinary masterpiece of art. I pay more for these molas, however I am very confident that is high quality, something that will last for the years to come.
I love the pieces that almost talk to me because of their beauty.

Dans cette photo, vous serez en mesure de voir étape par étape comment un mola est fait, le coin sont repliés dans le but de montrer le nombre de couches de tissu qui ont été utilisés à cette assemblée mola.
L'utilisation est Technique: Reverse Applique Applique ou:
La technique est un peu compliqué, et la séquence de base sont les suivants: élaborer la conception, arroser, tailler et coudre.
Le travail manuel se fait en deux panneaux, chaque panneau a une conception analogue, mais jamais exactement les mêmes.
Le tissu utilisé et la taille des molas ont évolué au fil du temps.
Pendant longtemps, les Kunas utilisé percale importés d'Angleterre, mais maintenant ils utilisent du coton ou tout mélange de coton tissu disponible de la Colombie ou soit un magasin de tissu local au Panama, ils ont préféré un matériau qui est souple et facile à la main, rappelez-vous qu'ils utilisent plusieurs couches de tissu et l'aiguille doit passer par toutes les couches. Depuis mola est devenu une source majeure de revenus, au point de nombreuses femmes en créer de nouveaux à chaque instant de rechange, souvent la nuit par une lampe au kérosène. (Quelques-uns de ces îles ont des générateurs pour produire de l'électricité).
Comment un mola est faite:
Les Kunas sélectionnera plusieurs couches carré de tissu, l'une des couches servira de couche de fondation, cette couche restera entière et non coupée. Il devient la couleur de fond et prend en charge la couture des autres couches. Ils pourront également choisir d'autres couches de tissu qui sera placée sur le dessus de la couche de fondation.
Pour faire une mola, les femmes kuna dessine le dessin sur la couche supérieure. Puis elle arrose soigneusement le long de la ligne et des réductions sur les 1 / 8 de pouce sur les deux côtés de la ligne arrosé. Puis, sous les plis sur les 1 / 16 "le long de l'arête de coupe de la couche supérieure et coud le bord plié de la couche de base en utilisant points cachés correspondant fil et une aiguille fine, les points doivent être petits, régulièrement espacées, le fil doit correspondre au top couche, la conception doit toujours se démarquer. Sur les pointes acérées tour sous l'excès de tissu dans un petit espace, puis couper ce qui dépasse de tissu, une fois que vous commencez à coudre un mola le premier nœud doit être caché et pour finir la fin proprement , les Kunas de faire une boucle au dernier point et mettre l'aiguille à travers. Certains des responsables mola les plus expérimentés ne pas utiliser un crayon pour dessiner la conception, ils ont coupé la conception directement sur les couches carré de tissu.
Toutes les couches y aura du travail sur le dessus de la couche de fondation, chaque couche de tissu aura des coupures qui révèlent les couleurs des couches en dessous (la couche de fondation reste entier et non coupé). Pour molas avec plusieurs couches le processus est répété jusqu'à ce que le thème est fini. Gardez à l'esprit que la mola est fait avec 2, 3, 4 ou plusieurs couches de tissu. Un grand nombre de couches sur chaque mola moyens plus élevés et la meilleure qualité.
La surface entière de la mola devrait être utilisé, mais toutes les conceptions supplémentaires, bandes, triangles, cercles, etc, broderie supplémentaires devraient mettre en évidence le sujet principal et de ne pas occulter.
Molas avec une variété de couleurs et de motifs de remplissage complexe nécessitent des étapes supplémentaires, dont plusieurs finitions.
Dans les îles, les molas ne durent pas très longtemps parce que l'air marin finit par les détruire. C'est la raison pour laquelle il n'ya pas de vieux "antique" molas dans les îles.
Molas est également devenu très articles de collection et de nombreuses personnes aujourd'hui sont les nouvelles utilisations de molas.
L'origine du peuple Kuna est incertain. Ils peuvent être des descendants des Indiens des Caraïbes, certains anthropologues croient que les Kuna (kuna) pour avoir provenu de l'Asie du Sud il ya six mille années.
Les similitudes de l'aiguille de la Kuna et le peuple Hmong du Laos, le Cambodge et le Vietnam sont étonnants. Personnellement, je propres quelques morceaux de Hmong et je compare le travail et il est très similaire.
Quelle est la méthode applique Kuna inverse: c'est la méthode qui nécessite l'utilisation de plusieurs couches de tissu qui seront coupés sur des motifs complexes et la découpe des couches supérieures se révèlent les couches les plus coloré en dessous.
Sur un mola chaines complexes sont toujours découpés et cousus en vertu de révéler les dessous de la couche (s), également à définir le bord d'une figure. Ces chaînes peuvent être aperçu à 2, 3, 5 ou 6 lignes. Il ya beaucoup de façon complexe de la création de l'esquisse à plusieurs, d'autres impliquent l'ajout de marqueterie étroite.
Le mola mesures traditionnelles de 16 "x 13", et ensuite seront intégrées dans la partie médiane d'une blouse, un servant de l'avant et l'autre que le dos. Lors de la présentation ensemble comme une paire sur une blouse, deux molas devrait présenter le même sujet, se ressemblent beaucoup et ne diffèrent que dans les petits détails des dessins et des couleurs, ils doivent toujours harmoniser les uns avec les autres.
Le modèle devrait être équilibrée et proportionnelle, mais pas nécessairement symétrique, car aucune des mesures précises sont utilisés.
Le mot Mola, est en langue Morra Kuna et les moyens la tenue de la kuna femmes et il a une relation profonde avec la nature.
Les couleurs de ces arts proviennent les principales couleurs: le rouge, noir et orange.
Molas s'est diversifiée dans la tradition et les commerciaux. Selon les artisans Kuna, les traditionnels sont plus difficiles à faire parce qu'ils sont faits de plusieurs couches de tissu, chaque couche a des coupures qui révèle les couleurs ci-dessous. Les commerciaux a beaucoup d'images d'animaux et la nature, ils sont plus faciles à faire parce que la composition est faite de beaucoup de morceaux de tissu "appliqués".
Mola Art a commencé environ deux cents ans auparavant. Le mola est probablement originaire de la peinture du corps au début des femmes dans le dix-septième siècle, et ensuite appliqué sur un chiffon puis robe décorations.
Beaucoup de gens pensent que bien molas sont une chose du passé et que les personnes âgées molas sont mieux qu'aujourd'hui ceux mais ce n'est pas vrai. Les molas sont aujourd'hui de plus en plus complexe et détaillée que Kunas ever. The sont la sélection des couleurs plus vives, plus de détails, plus de broderie, dans l'ensemble, ils constituent un élément exceptionnel de création d'œuvres d'art de haute qualité.

Her teacher used a baseball metaphor to share with me that she "knocked it out of the park" with her project and received an A grade.

The Art of the Kuna Women's of San Blas is just amazing.
Here are some molas that give us the Oh! Ah! and that as soon as I see them, I will say I like it and I want it... I must have this one... forget it I will buy them all, these molas are made with the tiny stitches that you will need a magnifiying glass to look at them.

Quilters love using molas as a center piece on a quilt, they also appreciate all the work that has gone into each piece, the different techniques use on each mola, as well as the variety of designs and colors.
A quilter will be inspired by the unique work on each mola, each technique is different (applique or reverse applique), the fine stitch on each piece, the mix of colors and how molas can be incorporated into any quilting project.

Hi Everyone: Hope all of you are doing good. I love to see
that many people out there are keeping up with my blog.

Frequently, I received questions about what are the main
things I do with my molas???
today I decided to speak up a little bit and share with you a
few things...

How to display your Molas???
It is entirely up to you, what you want to do with your mola.
I personally love framing my molas, making something for
my home that I can use, quilts, pillows, placemats, tablecloth, aprons, purse, pot holders, mola panels can be worn by sewing them into a jacket, skirt, blouse, etc...
The mola looks better in person and the gold frame add more beauty to this particular mola.
You can also frame your small molitas (framed in Panama)
front and back of my pillows, I decide to use a black fabric on the
back, it actually give great contrast specially because I use a mola
with black background.
I didn't have to necessarily use black, it will also look great with the
orange fabric (front and back).

“Expresiones del Folklore Panameno”
"El arte mas colorido de nuestra cultura"
La vida simple de los Kunas ha cambiado muy poco despues del descubrimiento de las Americas por Cristobal Colon.
Panama tiene siete maravillosas culturas indigenas y los Kunas es uno de los grupos indigenas que ha sabido preservar sus traditicones autenticas hasta estos dias. Los "Kunas" o "Cunas" de la comarca Kuna-Yala, oriundos de San Blas, es una de las principales etnias indigenas de Panama. Y representan un aporte muy importante a la artesania nacional. “Las Molas”
Una cadena de islas localizada en el atlantico de Panama es el hogar del grupo indigena de los Kunas o Cunas, en este archipielago de islas o Kuna Yala (formalmente conocido como La Comarca de San Blas), los Kunas han mantenido su identidad Cultural y Autonomia Interna, pese a muchos muchos anos de lucha por mantener su identidad y cultura.
Ademas, muy poco se conoce del comienzo de la historia de los Kunas.
El origen de los Kunas es desconocidos. Ellos pueden ser descendientes de los Indios del Caribe, algunos antropologos creen que los Kunas (Cuna) se originaron en el sur de Asia seis mil anos atras.
El trabajo a mano de los Kunas es muy parecido al de los Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam llamado “Hmong” estos trabajos son muy similares a los de los Kunas.
El arte de la mola comenzo doscientos anos atras.
En un principio las mujeres Kunas utilizaban pieles de animales con plumas (pelicanos, pajaros, guacamayas, etc).
De acuerdo con las primeras descripciones de Andagoya en 1514 las mujeres se pintaban sus pieles o cuerpo con colores brillantes y disenos abstractos o geometricos, con figuras o motivos como animales, plantas, etc. Ellas utilizaban tintas extraidas de fibras de vegetales, los colores eran rojo, azul y amarillo.
El contacto de los Kunas con los Espanoles y por ende el contacto con las telas, ademas de el proceso de sus pinturas en el cuerpo que eventualmente paso a las telas y posteriormente se empezaron a crear disenos utilizando retazos de telas, es asi como nacen las primeras molas elaborada con telas.
Que es una mola?
Existen muchas piezas de Arte en Panama que provienen de nuestros aborigenes, sin embargo "La Mola" es uno de los trabajos de arte mas famosos de Panama, y es uno de los de mayor reconocimiento a traves de todo el mundo, tanto asi que se han logrado convertir en piezas especiales de coleccion, ademas de formar parte de muchos museos alrededor del mundo.
La palabra Mola es “Morra” en el lenguaje Kuna (Dulegaya), significa el vestuario de la mujer Kuna (la Blusa de los Kunas) y tiene una relacion bien ligada a la naturaleza.
Los Kunas utilizan frecuentemente colores primarios como lo son el amarillo, azul, rojo, etc. y como base principal utilizan los colores como el negro, naranja, rojo vino, y en algunas ocasiones podemos encontrar el azul laguna, rojo, rosado, y el blanco.
Las molas son como un libro de historia para los Kunas ellas guardan felicidad, tristeza, tradicion, cultura y todos los eventos q hayan ocurrido en su vidas.
Estas piezas son un verdadero trabajo de arte, y son preferidos por muchos colleccionistas.
Las molas se utilizan para adornar todo tipo de vestidos, blusas, sueteres de damas, camisas y corbatas para hombres, asi como diferentes tipos de articulos como carteras, bolsos para cosmeticos, zapatos, sandalias, estuches para lentes, estuches para celulares, guantes de cocinas, almohadas, cortinas, manteles de mesa, guindados de pared, se pueden hacer sabanas de acolchado, se pueden enmarcar.
Tanto asi que se clasifican en molas comerciales y las tradicionales. Las comerciales son aquellas elaborada en aplicacion y en ellas se observan dibujos y disenos de la naturaleza, pajaros, peces, etc. Estas molas son destinadas principalmente para la venta a los turista que visitan nuestro pais. Las tradicionales son aquellas que se ven con figura o diseno geometrica. Estas son mucho mas complicadas en su elaboracion porque se utiliza la tecnica de aplicacion al reverso y se trabajan con varias capas de tela (ellas son las que forman parte de la blusa de la mujer Kuna).
Como se elaboran?
Tecnica: Aplicacion al Reverso o Aplicacion
La tecnica de aplicacion al reverso es un poco complicada, pero las molas que son elaboradas utilizando esta tecnica son consideradas las mejores y son las que forman parte de la blusa de la mujer Kuna.
Las molas tradicionales son elaboradas con muchas capas de tela superpuestas. Se escogen las telas que se van a utilizar, generalmente una mola regular debe medir 16 ½” x 13”, ellos escojen una de las telas como base, luego se coloca una encima de la base, y se dibujan las lineas que se quieren recortar, una vez dibujadas se procede a hacer el corte en la tela, y posteriormente a cocerla sobre la otra de tal modo que en las incisiones realizadas se observe el color del textil inferior. Este proceso se hace una y otra vez hasta finalizar el diseno.
Algunos de los mas expertas (os) en el proceso de confeccionar molas no utilizan lapiz para dibujar el diseno, si no que recortan el diseno directamente en las capas de telas.
En cambio, el proceso para las molas comerciales es mas facil. “El diseno es realizado por retazos de tela pegados (metodo de applique) unos sobre otros con una forma predetermined, y posteriormente se cosen en esa position para finalizar la obra de arte, esto hace que sean mucho mas sencillas de hacer”. Dichas piezas son identificadas por el colorido que hay en sus composiciones. Los colores primarios de la etnia Kuna son el negro, el naranja y el rojo; por eso es que se observan muchos colores.
Sin embargo en las molas podemos conseguir una variedad de colores y todo va a depender de lo que la artesana desee expresar en ese momento y lo que la haya inspirado.
Sus disenos son propios de su expresion artistica y elaborado por ellos mismos.
Como nace la inspiracion para los disenos de las molas?
Las mujeres Kunas encuentran inspiracion para sus disenos de mola en la vida cotidiana, en todo lo que rodea a la artesana al momento de confeccionar una pieza, naturaleza, animales, plantas, religion, deportes, simbolos patrios. Muchas veces por lo que vieron en las bases militares de Estados Unidos en Panama (Ejemplos Elicopteros, Emblemas Militar), por los barcos o cruceros que transitan a traves del Canal de Panama (Ejemplo: Disney Cruise), por lo que vean en los turistas. Ademas, como los Kunas viven en las islas y tienen mucha abundancia de peces y aves, por eso es que siempre se hacen piezas con estos disenos.
En cambio las molas tradicionales siempre se dice que los disenos provienen de los cantos que las mujeres escuchan de nuestros caciques, leyendas, suenos o pura imaginacion.
¿Cuál es la mision detras de la venta del arte de la mola? (¿Quién se beneficia)
Mola Art and Craft se inicio con el sueño de compartir este arte desde las remotas islas de San Blas a través de un compromiso de apoyar a los indígenas Kunas de San Blas para mantener su historia, trandicion y cultura.
A través de la venta de molas los Kunas buscan los medios de seguridad financiera, una mejor educación para sus hijos, salud, etc. La venta de las molas es el unico ingreso que reciben los Kunas para sus familias. Los Kunas viven en islas pequeñas con oportunidades económicas limitadas.
¿Qué caracteristicas hacen a una mola algo especial?
Molas son parte de la identidad cultural de la mujer Kuna. Ellas representan a sus creencias, su vida cotidiana y el medio ambiente.
Lo que hace una mola tan especial, es la mezcla de los diseños llamativos, brillantes colores y costuras meticulosa.
Ademas es un arte que se colecciona y que su valor aumenta a traves de los anos.
Cómo se involucró con el arte de la mola?
¿Como lo aprendistes, etc?
Nací en la provincia de Penonome y crecí en la ciudad de Panamá, creo que el haber nacido en una provincia en donde se le da mucho valor al arte, al folklore, a las polleras ha tenido mucho que ver.
Yo estudie Economía en la universidad, pero siempre tuve pasion por el arte y la historia especialmente el de mi pais (Panama). Mi experiencia de trabajo aquí en los EE.UU. incluyen la enseñanza de programas de computacion, hipotecas, venta de bienes raíces, además de que siempre sentia amor y pasión por los textiles, tejidos, siempre coleccionaba arte de Panamá, y con algunas piezas las utilizaba para decorar mi hogar y otras en costuras.
En el ano 2000 finalmente escuche a la parte artistica dentro de mi y comienza el interes en trabajar con la tela y más tarde empecé a vender las molas, el arte “textiles” de mi país, y "Mola Art and Craft" nació con un sueño de compartir el arte de estas islas remotas ubicadas en Panamá con los residente de Estados Unidos y de muchos otros países.
Cuentame un poco mas de tus productos y el nombre de tu coleccion???
En primer lugar quisiera comentales que mi colección se creó a principios del ano 2008 y esta disponible para la venta en mi sitio web desde mayo del 2008. He sido afortunado de vender todas las carteras a través de mi sitio web y algunos de ellas localmente. bolsos BellaModa son "algo unico" o una edición limitada, todas las molas son hechas a mano y es algo maravilloso saber que eres la única persona, o uno de los pocos en adquirir o poseer uno de estos bolsos o monederos. A muchas personas les encanta la idea de que están que tienen o estan usando algo que es exclusivo. Es algo especial porque el arte de las molas reflejan historia y la cultura.
"BellaModa" es el nombre de mi última colección, incluyendo bolsos acolchados (tienen parecido a la line Vera Bradley), bolsos de jeans, almohadas, forros de almohada, delantales, bolsos para panales, bolsas para niños.
Qué te inspiró para crear esta colección de bolsos, acolchados, almohadas, y delantales?
Mi inspiracion nace de distintas fuentes. Mis diseños son, evidentemente, muy influidos por las flores, pájaros, mariposas, tortugas, pero sobre todo por la belleza y el color de las Molas, por mi cultura, que es rica y colorida, ademas de la inspiracion por lo que veo a mi alrededor. Al observar la moda de hoy y las variaciones de la tela, a veces me puede dar ideas, y luego viene la inspiración de todos los tejidos de distinto tipo que me encanta trabajar, por otro lado los temas y colores en la Mola con diseños contemporáneos.
Tengo una pasión por las Molas, por todos sus colores y diseños. A mi me gusta coleccionarlas. Yo soy el tipo de persona que amo los artículos con colores vibrantes.
Me gusta disenar y elaborar bolsos modernos que a mis clientes les encante.
¿Tiene algún consejo de como vender y promocionar articulos hecho a mano??
Cuando se trata de vender articulos hecho a mano lo mejor es describir las caracteristicas correctamente, informarle a los clientes que lo que está comprando es algo único y especial, tambien es necesario promocionar lo que haces.
¿Qué recomienda usted a alguien debe hacer si quiere aprender el arte mola? (Libros, clases, videos, tutoriales, etc.)
